When I left
college at the University of South Carolina, I had ridden over 25,000 miles or
railroad as a part-time hobo, and I invited Charles Kuralt to come along.
He agreed and planned to hop a freight train with me years ago for a CBS "On the
Road" segment. We were going to ride the rails from Bakersfield to
Los Angeles. However, my rap sheet started when I got arrested "practicing" for
the Kuralt trip. Since we couldn't get legal permission to do it, we had
to sneak on in Bakersfield. The judge sentenced me to three-years
probation and ordered me to never go near a freight train during that time.
We had to scrub the idea and years later, in his Phoenix hotel room, Preston
interviewed Kuralt about the story.
