   ruins by workshop walls

(photo, above left) Stabilized walls in the huge complex near the workshop and to the West of the home. (above right)  Extensive ruins to the East of the home.  Much of the area of the property has never been investigated.

 sagauro on the ruins
It takes a saguaro cactus about a year to grow an inch and about 40 years to grow an arm.  This gives you the idea of the age of these ruins with a cactus growing out of the walls. Some of the ruins have been dated to 1100 AD.   The 2300 sq. ft. home sits on a bluff at the bottom of the Southern slope of Apache Mountain, where a creek known as Blue Wash drains the area, flowing toward Camp Creek, a tributary of the Verde River.  The former inhabitants are considered to be Northern Periphery Hohokam, who came up from the Phoenix basin to farm in a more temperate climate.  The site was possibly used seasonally. There is evidence of check dams on the property, used for irrigation, as the Hohokam had a diet mainly of corn, squash and native beans, supplemented with meat from area rabbits and deer. Cotton seeds and spindle whorls were found on the property, indicating they made their own cloth. Numerous artifacts have been found, from stone manos and matates, lithics, pottery, sea shells, animal bones and some decorative ceramics and stones.  The artifacts are now in collection at the Pueblo Grande Museum.  The site report, filed by the previous owner is AZU:1:14.   All visits to the site must be cleared with the listing agents. There can be no unauthorized visits to the area, please.  Thank you.
